Orquesta Forever Tango

Historical background

Forever Tango is not an orquesta típica in the Buenos Aires sense: it is the orchestra of a stage show conceived and directed by Luis Bravo, a cellist trained at the Manuel de Falla conservatory and a former member of the Argentine National Symphony Orchestra. Eleven musicians play on stage, four of them on bandoneon, alongside two violins, viola, cello, double bass and piano, with dancers and a singer - Carlos Morel appears in the 1997 cast. Lisandro Adrover wrote the music and arrangements; Victor Lavallén also serves as musical director and composed part of the show's music.

Its trajectory is that of a show, not of a dance orchestra. After ninety-two consecutive weeks at San Francisco's Theater on the Square - a box-office record for a touring musical, and the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle's Best Touring Musical award - then the Simpatia Prize at the 1996 Spoleto Festival, presented by Gian Carlo Menotti, Forever Tango moved to Broadway. Booked for eight weeks at the Walter Kerr Theatre, it ran fourteen months, from 19 June 1997 to 1 August 1998, across four previews and four hundred and fifty-eight performances, and earned a Tony Award nomination for choreography. It returned to the Shubert Theatre in 2004, then to the Walter Kerr in the summer of 2013. Elyse Sommer saw in it a hybrid of dance documentary, variety show and concert, focused on a single genre.
