Historical background

Color Tango is not a golden-age orchestra: it is a contemporary repertoire ensemble, founded in Buenos Aires in 1989 by bandoneon player Roberto Álvarez with one specific aim: to carry forward the sound of Osvaldo Pugliese. Álvarez was no self-appointed heir: he had been Pugliese's own bandoneonist and arranger, joining the orchestra in 1978 and holding the first-bandoneon chair from 1984 until he left in 1989 to form his own ensemble, taking with him twenty-five arrangements he had written for Pugliese's repertoire. By January 1990 the orchestra was already on tour in the Netherlands, playing twenty-six concerts before recording its debut album that March. The discography wears this lineage openly, most explicitly in the album Tango a Pugliese (2003), and the orchestra released a twentieth-anniversary album, 20 años, in 2009.

Roberto Álvarez was born on 7 May 1940 in Chacabuco, Buenos Aires province. Trained on bandoneon by professor Hector Marseletti, he joined his teacher's orchestra at the age of fourteen, then led his own trio from 1965 to 1975, backing singers including Roberto Goyeneche, Alberto Marino and Floreal Ruiz before joining Pugliese. The National Academy of Tango elected him an honorary academician in 2015, and he received the Gobbi de Oro award in 2019. In 2021 he announced his retirement from directing Color Tango, handing the first-bandoneon chair to Ramiro Boero; he died on 5 March 2023, at the age of 82. For a DJ, Color Tango offers something fairly rare: Pugliese's sound played today by one of his own arrangers, rather than reconstructed by a generation that never worked alongside him.
