Historical background
Juan D'Arienzo earned his nickname "El Rey del Compás" (The King of the Beat) for the revolution he sparked in tango from July 1935 onward: a return to guardia vieja repertoire and style, but delivered with modern arrangements and an irresistible staccato swing that turned a whole generation of listeners into dancers. Tango's intelligentsia was scandalised by this apparent step backwards, but the public loved it.
The orchestra's most iconic sound crystallised at the end of 1935 with the arrival of pianist Rodolfo Biagi, who D'Arienzo had noticed at a cabaret he frequented. As the story goes (recounted by Michael Lavocah), one night when D'Arienzo arrived late, Biagi, left alone with the band, started playing 9 de Julio his own way, more rhythmic and aggressive: the crowd went wild, and D'Arienzo had to adopt the new style. Their partnership ended in June 1938 when D'Arienzo, jealous of an ovation given to his pianist, fired him on the spot.
